I am Professor of Political Science at the University of Oslo, specializing in comparative politics, gender and politics, and comparative political economy, with a regional focus on South Asia.
My main research interest is how institutional design and electoral dynamics affect different types of inequality. In the book Social Justice through Inclusion: The Consequences of Electoral Quotas in India (2017, OUP), I explored long-term effects of electoral quotas for the Scheduled Castes in India. In the forthcoming book The Reciprocity Trap: Weak parties, Elite Networks, and the Marginalization of the Poor in India (forthcoming CUP), Pradeep Chhibber and I draw on a wide array of data to demonstrate how weak political parties and identity politics has marginalized poor voters in India. I am also working on a Cambridge Element in Gender and Politics about the global inequality of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs) with My Rafstedt and Eli Baltzersen.
In other projects I focus on the effects of various political institutions, policies, legal changes, electoral dynamics, and more, in India and beyond. Please follow the links above to see my publications, work in progress, datsets, and media appearances.
